Description
Regarding this interpretation of After You’ve Gone, Jonathan Stout explains that it’s a tune he has known for a long time. The piece is performed here in Bb.
As usual, Jonathan Stout makes use of well-chosen chord voicings, always in the service of swing and harmonic clarity. The theme is stated very clearly, while the chorus, strongly inspired by the style of Charlie Christian, offers plenty of ideas, directions, and licks for improvising on this essential standard.
This performance is played on a 1939 Gibson L-5.
In the PDF version, I have also included a transcription of a chorus taken from the Chorus a Day video series, providing additional material and inspiration for exploring improvisation on this standard.
