Description
Here is a compilation of six Charlie Christian’s solo transcriptions on the B♭ blues ‘Benny’s Bugle’. As a bonus, the PDF version includes a transcription of a riff played by the band on certain takes.
Charlie Christian’s solos on Benny’s Bugle (1940) display a perfect balance of consistency and invention: each begins with a recognizable phrase before branching into new ideas. In the studio takes 2–5 he crafts swinging, blues-tinged lines full of long runs and biting accents, culminating in the master take (6), a model of pacing and balance. The subsequent airchecks push him even further—on The Make Believe Ballroom he delivers a free-wheeling, inspired solo often considered one of his best fast blues statements, while the Monte Proser Dance Carnival version drives at a breakneck tempo yet still reveals his precision and inventiveness through dazzling runs and sharp contours.
